Preparing Your Car for Springtime in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Car accidents can be caused by any number of things, including drowsy driving, distracted driving, and reckless driving. Regardless of the cause, it is normally due to another person’s negligence that an accident occurs in the first place. However, there are times where a person is taking all the proper precautions while they are on the road, and they still cause an accident due to their car having a mechanical failure of some sort. Some malfunctions simply seem to come out of nowhere—but as car owners, it’s our job to maintain our vehicles properly to avoid unnecessary break-downs and accidents.

A good time to perform some basic maintenance on your car is when the seasons change. Now that spring has arrived, and your vehicle has undoubtedly taken a beating from this past winter in Pennsylvania, it’s time to spruce things up and get your car ready to drive safely through the warmer months.

  • Have your brakes checked. Brake parts can corrode during the winter because of all the salt on the roads. Brakes also work extra hard when the road is slick, so give them some TLC to make sure they’re still working properly. There’s no easier way to cause an accident than to suddenly realize your brakes aren’t letting you stop.
  • Take a look at your tires. Having your brakes in good working order won’t make a difference if your tires are totally worn down. A basic test you can do at home without the help of a professional is to put a quarter in each tire’s grooves. If George Washington’s head is covered, you still probably have enough tread to drive safely. If not, you need to look in to getting some new tires.
  • Check your windshield wipers. This may seem silly and basic, but winter can really ruin your windshield wipers… and it’s not something you want to discover in the middle of an extreme April rain storm. You can cause an accident within seconds of a heavy rain starting and realize your wipers no longer get the job done.

Your local auto repair shop specializes in this type of thing, so you may just want to bring it by and ask them to make sure everything is in working order. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to car accidents!
