SchmidtKramer Awards 13 Essay Contest Winners
More than 600 students from 15 area schools recently participated in the2010 United Cerebral Palsy of Central Pennsylvania/SchmidtKramer Attitudes Essay Contest, which asked students to write about the positive abilities and potential barriers that exist between people with and without disabilities.
Students wrote about the everyday challenges experienced by people with disabilities and about potential barriers created by people with negative attitudes. Using their insight to illustrate their points, students wrote essays that created new ways of thinking, discussed how to openly and honestly communicate about people with disabilities, or criticized the stereotypes that have historically limited people with disabilities, to name a few.

Thirteen essayists, ranging in age from elementary to high school students, were selected as this year’s winners. They represent a generation that recognize and value the abilities of all people, and they understand disabilities only become a handicap when structural barriers and poor attitudes are present.
The top three winners in each age category were presented with cash awards and certificates of excellence. All participants received certificates and special tokens of appreciation.
