Khaaliq Lynch, 17, a junior at Jim Thorpe, was reported in the trauma unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, after being flown by Medevac helicopter Sunday afternoon. The accident occurred along Jonas Road in Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County, about 12:08 p.m.
Troopers said a 17-year-old, also from Albrightsville, was traveling westbound racing another vehicle, operated by another 17-year-old. As a vehicle approached from the east, the driver swerved to the right to avoid a head-on collision with the two speeding vehicles.
The first racing vehicle swerved to the right in front of the other vehicle it had been racing. The operator then lost control of the vehicle. It slid across the road and struck a wooden fence.
On impact, one of the fence posts penetrated the rear window of the vehicle, striking the passenger-side headrest. It penetrated the headrest and the fence post struck Lynch in the head.
Troopers did not indicate if anyone else in the crashed vehicle was hurt.
The other racing vehicle also contained juveniles, troopers said. The eastbound car that swerved to avoid the racing vehicles had five passengers in it. It ended up in a field with no one injured.
Troopers said multiple citations will be filed against the driver of the vehicle that crashed and also the driver of the other racing vehicle.
Lynch has been having an outstanding high school athletic career at Jim Thorpe, starring in both football and basketball
Assisting troopers were West End Fire Company volunteers along with fire police and ambulance.
