Take Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Survey On Driver Safety

PennDOT wants to know how often you engage in various risky behaviors on the road.  Some questions include:

Do you often drive faster than the 65 mph speed limit?

How many times in the last two months have you driven within two hours after having an alcoholic beverage?

Do you text while driving?

As part of its 2011 Highway Safety Survey PennDOT has a 19-question survey which all states are required to conduct annually by The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  The questionnaire is designed to reveal motorists’ driving behaviors and opinions of traffic-safety enforcement in order to help PennDOT prioritize its highway-safety efforts, according to a news release issued Monday by the agency.

For the remainder of July, motorists may fill out the survey online at www.DriveSafePa.org:

It takes just a few minutes to complete, and answers to all questions are anonymous.  Last year, more than 3,800 Pennsylvania drivers responded to the survey. Most believed they are safe drivers. But the survey also found more than half of motorists said they rarely thought someone would be ticketed for driving under the influence or without a seatbelt.

Among other findings of the 2010 survey was that nearly 80 percent of motorists reported that within the past 60 days they did not drive within two hours of drinking alcohol. Ninety-one percent of drivers also indicated they used a seat belt all or most of the time.

Nearly half of respondents admitted to speeding, with 44 percent saying they drive faster than 70 mph in a 65 mph zone. That same survey revealed that 55 percent of drivers expect to be ticketed when speeding.

The vast majority, 81 percent, of drivers said they never or rarely talk on a handheld cell phone. While 92 percent said they do not text or email while driving.

The results of the 2011 survey will be released by PennDOT later this year.

Completing a survey takes just a little amount of time and can help with reducing car crashes in and around Pennsylvania.
