Speed A Contributing Factor In Crash That Injured Driver

March 29, 2012

Speeding in cars is dangerous because the force of the impact is relative to how fast the vehicle is moving. In other words, the faster you go, the harder you hit.

One man learned this lesson the hard way when he was seriously injured in an accident Tuesday. According to reports from WHTM 27 News, an officer saw the man speeding in the westbound lanes of Derry Street in Paxtang. The officer attempted to follow the vehicle, but lost sight. A short time later, police were called to the scene of an accident the speeding driver had been involved in.

Police estimate that the driver was going approximately 90 mph on the road when he struck five parked vehicles between 14th and 15th Streets. The driver was trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle and required extrication by Harrisburg firefighters before being taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center to receive treatment for his extensive injuries.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that speeding is one of the most prevalent and preventable causes of motor vehicle accidents in the United States today and has a price tag of roughly $40.4 billion per year.

This is why the Pennsylvania Car Accident Attorneys with Schmidt Kramer Injury Lawyers ask that drivers keep safe behind the wheel by always monitoring and obeying the posted speed limit of the road that they are on.

Tips For Motorcycle Safety

In the past few years we have seen more and more people use motorcycles as their primary mode of transportation.  Also, with the approach of nice weather, we will see more more people operating motorcycles on the roads in and around Central Pennsylvania and the entire Commonwealth.

When operating a motorcycle it is imporant to be safe.  Here are a few tips that can improve your level of safety:

1.  Be safe by conducting a pre-ride check to identify any mechanical defects with your motorcycle.
2.  Be visible by signaling your intentions, making sure your headlight works and is on day and night, using reflective strips or decals on your clothing and on your motorcycle, and flashing your brake light when you are slowing down and before stopping.
3.  Dress safely by wearing an approved helmet and eye protection, and wearing bright colored clothing, over the ankle foot protection, long pants, long-sleeved shirt, and full-fingered gloves.
4.  Use common sense by keeping a safe distance from other motorists and give yourself enough time to react to dangerous situations, using lane positioning to be seen; ride in the part of a lane where you are most visible, and avoid weaving between lanes.
5.  Ride unimpaired by not riding when you are tired or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
6.  Ride by being courteous and responsible with respect to other drivers.
7.  Don’t speed and know the local traffic laws and rules of the road.
8.  Be Prepared by developing your riding techniques before going into heavy traffic and knowing how to handle your bike in conditions such as wet or sandy roads, high winds, and uneven surfaces.

First Responder Vehicle Struck By Suspected Drunk Driver In Eastern Pennsylvania

March 19, 2012 – As emergency personnel in Whitehall, Pennsylvania were trying to clear the road from one accident, their emergency vehicle was struck by a suspected drunk driver.  According to Allentown paper The Morning Call, the accident happened on March 11, 2012 on Route 22 when a suspected drunk driver struck the open driver’s door and drove past signs and construction cones and flares that were set up.  The driver then struck two other cars, injuring three people.

The charges for drunk driving are still pending against the driver.   If found guilty, he will be held criminally responsible for these negligent actions.   The National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported 10,839 fatalities from alcohol-impaired-driving crashes in 2009.  These fatalities accounted for 32 % of the total motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States.

Of particular concern is the increase in alcohol-related crashes on holiday weekends.  For instance, St. Patrick’s Day has also become very dangerous because of the large volume of drunk drivers that night.  In 2009, the NHSTA reported 103 crash fatalities that day and 37 % involved alcohol-impaired drivers.

Traumatic Brain Injuries Are Often Not Recognized But Become More Prevalent

March 16, 2012 – According to statistics compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are emerging as a major problem in the United States, including Pennsylvania.  The estimates are that 1.7 million people suffer a TBI each year.  TBIs can cause permanent disability and, in some cases, even death.  Of the 1.7 million people who suffer a TBI each year, roughly 275,000 are hospitalized and approximately 52,000 are killed.

A TBI is very often not recognized and can be easily mis-diagnosed.  This happens very often in car accidents and car wrecks in Pennsylvania where the injured person sustains a concussion.  A TBI can be caused by any blow or jolt to the head that causes a disruption of normal brain function.   Falls – either in the home or workplace – are a leading cause of traumatic brain injuries.   It is also not uncommon for motor vehicle accident victims to suffer TBIs: the violent stop-and-go motion of a car crash causes the brain to move and strike the inside of the skull, which can result in bleeding or more serious injury.

If you think you have suffered a TBI you should seek medical attention immediately.

Bus And Tractor Trailer Collide In Western PA; One Dead, 21 Injured

March 15, 2012

A collision between a bus and a tractor-trailer Wednesday injured 21 children and killed the truck driver. According to Channel 21 News, the accident happened at 2:30 p.m. on Route 281, near Rockwood, Pennsylvania.

A Turkeyfoot Valley Area School District bus was returning students and two adults from a field trip to a vocational and technical school in Somerset, Pennsylvania. A spokesman for the Pennsylvania State Police, Steve Limani, says that the driver of the tractor-trailer crossed over the median and collided with the bus head-on. The truck driver was killed instantly and was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

Those who were injured on the bus were taken to several different local hospitals to receive treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. Their injuries ranged from minor, with patients being treated and released, to more serious cases. One woman remains in critical condition, while several other people are listed in fair condition.

Data from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) shows that 31 percent of all tractor-trailer accidents are caused by driver fatigue. The agency added that just because a driver is not yawning doesn’t mean they aren’t fatigued.

The Pennsylvania Truck Accident Attorneys with Schmidt Kramer Injury Lawyers wish all of those who were injured in this accident a speedy recovery. The firm would like to send their thoughts to the family of the trucker who died in the accident as well.
