What can be done to prevent future head injuries and deaths of high school athletes?

Three high school football players – one each in Alabama, New York and North Carolina – have tragically died in recent weeks from injuries sustained on-field.  Young people aged five to 14 accounted for 52 percent of the football injuries treated in emergency rooms in 2012, according to data from the National Safety Council. This age group accounted for 71 percent of gymnastics injuries, 53 percent of roller skating and 41 percent of track and field injuries treated in emergency rooms the same year.

How can the risk of injuries and these deaths be prevented?  In football, coaches are emphasizing better tackling techniques.  In some cases, the helmets are getting added padding.  Some schools are looking into special helmet sensors and others are implementing better concussion protocols.
